How to Choose Diamond Rings in NZ

Jewellery has always been a great idea for gifts. If you are looking at gifting your special someone with precious trinkets, then here are some helpful tips in choosing diamond rings in NZ.

Cut

When purchasing diamond rings, the cut of your center stones is one of the most important of the 4 Cs of diamond quality. The cut is not equivalent to the shape of the diamond. The cut refers to how well the stone was crafted and polished from its rough state. Based on the cut grade scale, always select an Excellent or Very Good Cut grade.

Colour

Diamond colour ranges from colourless to strong yellow, with corresponding grades of D to Z. The more colourless white diamonds are, then the more valuable they are also. On the other hand, for coloured diamonds, the more intense the hue, then the more valuable they are considered.

Clarity

The standard ranges from flawless to heavily included, with inclusions visible to the naked eye. According to experts, the best value for money would be VS2/Si1. Look at the stone closely enough and if you can see any inclusions, then don’t purchase that diamond.

Carat Weight

For diamonds, one carat weighs 0.2 grams. The best values are those that weigh just under the magic points. For example, a 0.9 carat stone can actually cost as much as 20% less than a 1 carat stone.

Certification

Don’t settle for in-house diamond certification. You have to look for certification provided by any of the top international certification bodies, such as the Gemological Institute of America Inc. (GIA).

Fluorescence

Diamonds react to Ultra Violet (UV) light, referred to as fluorescence. It is recommended that the diamond you purchase should fall under the Nil or Slight fluorescence as prices tend to drop significantly when the fluorescence level is stronger.

Metal

Diamonds look great with either platinum or white gold, but the latter looks fresher much longer. However, white gold is also lighter than platinum and needs to be rhodium plated annually. Still, many would prefer white gold for their diamond engagement rings.
